When in doubt, read the Style Guide

Happy Friday!!

Have you read the Style Guide lately? Giving the Style Guide a quick read-through every now and then would greatly improve everyone’s writing.  It’s so easy to forget little rules, or fall back on bad habits, or just take a guess at whether a movie title should be italicized or in quotes.  This weekend, take a peek at the Style Guide.  You just might learn something! 😉

QG How-To: Finding the elusive “quality links”

Hey everyone!

A lot of you have recently been asking for tips on improving your included links.  As you know, we prefer that you include links from authoritative sources, but when you do a Google search and get back 100,000 results, trying to pick out the .edu’s and .gov’s can be quite overwhelming!

Luckily, there is an easier way!

This tutorial will teach you simple commands that will allow you to search within .edu/.gov/.k12/.state. results EXCLUSIVELY!  Finding quality links has never been easier. 🙂

Think you can handle more?

Hi everyone-

We’ve recently gotten an enhancement to the Writer Panel that allows a user to claim an indefinite amount of articles at a time (as opposed to the standard five).  We’d like to offer this feature to our writers who have proven themselves again and again to not only be dependable, but who produce high-quality work.

If you’d like to be considered, send an email (and a brief explanation as to why you think you can handle the extra work) to QualityGal.  We’ll review your account and, if we feel you can handle it, we’ll lift the ban!

Any questions, as always, feel free to email me!

QG Tools of the Trade: “The Elements of Style”

Happy Monday everyone!

I thought I’d share with you one of my essentials for good writing: The Elements of Style by William Strunk and E.B. White (yes, the same E.B. White who wrote Charlotte’s Web!).  When I was in college studying journalism, The Elements of Style was a book recommended by my professor as an excellent resource for all kinds of writing-related questions one might have.  In fact, I always have my copy of  it handy when I’m editing your articles!  A classic resource for writers, students, or anyone else who needs to know the difference between a comma and a semicolon.

Because it’s such a commonly used book in college, it should be easy to find at any bookstore – you might even find it used!  Highly recommended. 🙂

How to make links + thanks!!

Happy Friday everyone!!

I recently got a question about to make links in articles, so I thought I’d post this quick tutorial.  It’s very simple to do!  These instructions are for users of Microsoft Word, but if you’re using a different program you can probably find instructions on how to do so in the “Help” tab.

To make links, follow these 4 easy steps:

1) In your word processing program, highlight the text you want to link.

2) Right click and click on hyperlink.

3) Paste the URL into the box labeled “type the file or webpage name.”

4) Click “OK”.

Also, a HUGE thank you to everyone who took the flooring/safe articles!!  We’re editing them right now and are so impressed with your work!  Keep it up!

I hope everyone has an excellent weekend!  Thanks for making my first week a great one. 🙂
