Hey everyone!
A lot of you have recently been asking for tips on improving your included links. As you know, we prefer that you include links from authoritative sources, but when you do a Google search and get back 100,000 results, trying to pick out the .edu’s and .gov’s can be quite overwhelming!
Luckily, there is an easier way!
This tutorial will teach you simple commands that will allow you to search within .edu/.gov/.k12/.state. results EXCLUSIVELY! Finding quality links has never been easier. 🙂
In either Google or Yahoo, type in the following:
site:.edu (search phrase)
This site command will search exclusively within .edu pages
– OR –
site:.gov (search phrase)
This site command will search exclusively within .gov pages
– OR –
site:.edu OR site:.gov (search phrase)
This site command will search exclusively within both .edu and .gov pages!
– OR –
inurl:k12
This inurl command will search exclusively within k12 pages; great for articles about kids!
– OR –
inurl:.state.
This inurl command will search exclusively within US state pages; great for articles about states and laws! And yes, that is dot state dot.
The “site:.___” portion should contain no spaces whatsoever. Then, put one space between the command and your search phrase. Obviously, replace (search phrase) with the search phrase of your choice (not in parenthesis!).
(Of course, not everything you get back will be quality information, so still scan these results with a discerning eye!!)
Here’s a quick example. Say you were writing an article on President Barack Obama and needed to do research and look for quality links. A .edu site command would be an excellent place to start!
Google search: site:.edu obama
I hope you all find this helpful!! If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to email me!
